A few recent Poynter articles I found to be of interest:

Hartford Courant Reverses Redesign Based on Reader Feedback

"Taking cues from readers in a recent poll, The Hartford Courant has opted to return to a traditional, horizontal nameplate on their front page. The oldest continuously published paper in the U.S., The Courant is reversing its move to a vertical nameplate in a redesign launched last September."

This is a prompt to share your favourite redesign horror stories.

MinnPost Experiments with Real-time Ads
Joel Kramer, MinnPost.com founder, explained the project in an announcement, saying:

"Imagine a restaurant that can post its daily lunch special in the morning and then its dinner special in the afternoon. Or a sports team that can keep you up-to-date on its games and other team news. Or a store that could offer a coupon good only for today. Or a performance venue that can let you know whether tickets are available for tonight. Or a publisher or blogger who gives you his or her latest headline."
( Continued... )

This could be good, yes? However, isn't this what Twitter is already doing?

I like it when atheist, non-car guys make fun of cars and hippies in car magazines.

Penn Jillette in Motor Trend:

So Jillette settled on a Bronco and, confident in his manhood, promptly painted it pink. "I'm very happy being big and effeminate," he says.

"I've been told by friends in L.A. that if you want to f--- Hollywood starlets, you've got to have a Prius," Jillette states with authority. "Everybody I know that has a Prius, has it just to get laid because douchebag women in L.A. who can't read think a Prius is someone who's saving the world! It's like guys that used to go to peace marches to get laid. Now you have a Prius to get laid in."

Since that isn't an issue for Jillette these days, he's happy with his Mini Cooper. "It's actually a much more green car than a Prius, but it doesn't play that way," he says. "It's a much better deal than the Prius and it doesn't have the batteries that are going to be impossible to get rid of."

Where is a good place to go in A2/Ypsi for dancing? Not Top 40 clubbing, but more along the lines of 50s/60s, Frank Sinatra-esque type music? Oh, and smoking/decent martinis would also be a big plus.

Here's a view that runs counter to the "we're all fucked" position. Granted it's by a news executive with a vested interest in the product but there's some good points in there along with some truly terrible ones.

There's more in the actual speech transcript.

May write more on this later when I'm not at work.

Official Fireworks and Parades Listing (Updated!) Jul. 1st, 2009 @ 05:35 pm
[info]bigdoug, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
The Ann Arbor news finally published a listing of events in the area in today's paper (nice timing *rolls eyes*). All info is borrowed from the Mlive.com and MichiganFirworks.com

Fireworks shows:

Ypsilanti - Tonight, July 1st, at 10pm at Lakeshore Apts (off Grove near Bridge Rd.) There's also a carnival and events going on through the 5th there.

Hudson Mills Metropark (outside of Dexter) - Friday around 10pm. There's also a live band, food, and events for children inside the park before the fireworks.

Manchester - Friday around 10pm, Carr Park.

Whitmore Lake - Saturday, 10pm, over the lake.

Fowlerville - Saturday, 10pm, in the community park.

Parades

Ann Arbor - Jaycee's Fourth of July Parade, 10am Saturday. Usually is on Liberty, Main, and Washington St.

Ypsilanti - 11am Saturday, on Cross St. from Wallace St (just past EMU) to Rice St. (just west of Depot Town), (route on google)

Whitmore Lake - Saturday, 12pm. The parade follows Main St.

Brighton - 10am Saturday, down Main St. from Church St. to 7th St. and then down 7th St. to the high school.

Fowlerville - 7pm Saturday through Downtown. Events all day.

Howell - 9am Friday, $5-10, Grand River Bvd.

Info will be updated as I get it.
If the event is free PLEASE DONATE A FEW DOLLARS to keep the events going year after year, some of us, myself included, remember the air shows and fireworks Ann Arbor used to have, and the events Chelsea used to have, before they shut them down!

Any other amateur mechanics looking for repair pals? Jul. 1st, 2009 @ 05:23 pm
[info]captainblack, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
I just started taking automotive technician classes at WCC, and while I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination, I am more than good enough to provide any fellow do-it-yourself-er with a second pair of hands when you're repairing your car, doing maintenance, etc.

I can now haltingly read wiring diagrams & schematics, though I still get a bit confused when using a multimeter/code reader.

I can use a torque wrench to make sure things stay on (and don't break off).

I know how to look for car info on teh internetz.

I know a few basic things about what sounds and effects cars make when they are trying to tell you they need a vet appointment.

I am beginning to understand all that confusing stuff about relays, charging systems, resistance, amperage, etc.

I am careful and patient enough to take the time to not make a problem worse with ham-fisted wrenching technique.

Just to clarify, I am NOT yet taking jobs repairing cars for pay. I am only good enough as yet to assist a basically competent do it yourself mechanic. Don't look to me as an expert (yet).

This is going out to other amateur mechanics who might want a wrenching pal. I am volunteering to *help you* work on your car, for free, because I need all the practice I can get.

In case it matters, I am a happily married youngish middle aged male.

Since this town is a good place to be paranoid, we can provide each other with local character references before arranging a meeting, if you like. Can't hurt.

Adult learning centers? Jul. 1st, 2009 @ 03:39 pm

Does anyone know of any adult learning centers in the area that can specifically teach reading? I have a cousin who is 23 whose reading level is not even that of a first grader. Oh, and I believe he is mildly autistic too, but that's besides the point.

Russian and American bussinesmen Jul. 1st, 2009 @ 10:09 pm
[info]napping_beauty, posting in [info]journalists
Hey, guys. I'm a journalist from Russia and now I'm working on an article, that involves analisis of Russian and American business. The article concerns family business. As I gathered information about businesses in my city I came to quite an interesting conclusion. A great number of small businesses are "girlfriends' businesses". Dresses, ice, cars etc. are not enough for a bussinesmen to express his love and devotion for a young nymph. They create small businesses for their girlfriends (for example: a local magazine, a shop, ads-agency). This kind of businesses are considered to be "foolproof" by our businessmen and their girlfriends, i.e. they bring money no matter how unprofessional their owner is (which is of course far from being the truth). So Russian businessmen are eager to make their girlfreinds financially independent. But they are not eager to make those girlfriends their wives. Very often a girlfreind gets a firm, but the wedding ring stays for her out of reach. I'm interested whether there's a similar tendency in USA. If there isn't anything of the kind, then it would be a good contrast. I would apreciate any relevant information.

Today is Canada Day.

In celebration, over on the Twitter (rj_white, if you are inclined to add), I have been posting True Canada Facts.

A sampling:
:: Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney is the estranged father of popular American actors Dermot Mulroney and Jenna Maroney.

:: The early CBC broadcast network originally included stations in MI and WIS until a series of bloody skirmishes in 1952.

:: Canadian TV comedy team Wayne & Shuster were the originators of the old "give 'em 20" school of comedy.

:: National Post cartoonist [info]chipzdarsky is actually an alias for American humor artist Jim Davis.

:: Hockey legend Don Cherry's collars are constructed in a facility in an industrial park outside of Winnipeg.

:: All Tim Hortons are connected by a network of pneumatic tubes. Through these, coffee flows from a massive central silo.

Happy Canada.

Sparked by [info]tongodeon post:

When asked that "You want to keep your teeth for the rest of your life" question by our dentist, I answered "no". They didn't say anything to me but mentioned it to my wife. They also constantly tried to upsell me with whitening and a teeth grinding night protector. I told them I grind my teeth during the day and sleep with my mouth wide open all night. My wife confirmed the mouth-dreaming. They ignored me and scheduled an expensive fitting. I never went back to them.

Park and Ride Bus Service at Arborland Jun. 30th, 2009 @ 04:56 pm
[info]quixotic_otaku, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
If you are interested in bus service continuing at Arborland Mall or if you use the parking lot as a commuter.  This service is scheduled to end tomorrow.  If you believe that having a commuter lot and bus service at Arborland is important, please call AmCap.

Call to let them know that it is a disservice and is bad business to cut services )

Members of Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice's transit coalition have been trying to talk to someone at AmCap for many days now, and we've been told that their offices have been instructed to say "no comment" on this issue. They have been receiving a lot of calls.

The time is running out for us to try to address this issue. So I am asking you to try to make one last push.

Can you call the AmCap corporate office today (203) 327-2001 and ask to speak to the president? If he is unavailable, simply leave a voicemail. Tell him what your concerns are and what the impact might be of moving the AATA bus stop..</div>

Phone number and other verbage behind cut.  I just called and they were taking the name and phone number of everyone who called.

For all of you who work full-time as freelance writers, how did/do you market yourselves? I've done a lot of the 'new-school' things like creating a website and sending e-mails, but getting a bit of a dismal response. Has anyone ever tried posting things in their hometowns, putting cards at businesses, and other 'old-school' marketing techniques like that? What kind of advice would you give?

What I'm trying to do is really get myself out there and get more and more writing jobs, besides my full-time job, and eventually go completely freelance. My niche is music journalism, and I've had pieces published in nationally-syndicated magazines and have done some more current work writing bios for PR firms and writing about local places for an upstart magazine here in Milwaukee.

So, my post has a couple of points: first, how do you market yourself?

Secondly, I would really love if a handful of you could look through my portfolio site at lizvanpay.com and let me know what you think about it. Constructive criticism is definitely appreciated!

Fireworks in the area Jun. 29th, 2009 @ 03:43 pm
[info]bigdoug, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
I have been looking up fireworks listing in the Washtenaw County area, as well as the Detroit area, and I have had little if any luck finding any listings. I keep on getting articles from 2008, 2007, 2005... doesn't help one bit. You would think they'd take those listings down after they were over, but I can't expect everyone to use their brain on this planet.

All I know is that Ypsilanti is having their fireworks at the Lakeview Apartments down Grove St on Wednesday, around 10ish, and they'll be shooting them over Ford Lake. Hudson Mills outside of Dexter has one on Friday night, I believe. Milan used to have one, but I don't see anything about it. Whitmore Lake may be having some on the fourth.

As for parades, I believe Ann Arbor and Ypsi are both having one, Ann Arbor usually has theirs at 10am. Whitmore Lake always has one, I'm not sure what the time is.

If anyone can confirm dates and times for me, and we can list an official calendar up here, that would be nice. As it is, I can't find shit online. :/
