i'm thinking of majoring in journalism. all i can think of is the people who do articles in the newspaper, and editors in magazines. is this job a lot of interviewing? how is schooling, is it generally a 4 year degree? how soon do you get a job once you have one?thanks alot. i really have no one to ask these questions to.

Redneck quote of the year Jan. 3rd, 2010 @ 01:41 pm

Since we could all use a good laugh, I thought I'd share this. Sadly, I don't know which paper it's from--I couldn't track down the original source.

"Debra Jackson says she likes shopping at the Dollar Palace because it is convenient and casual. 'I don't have to get all dressed up like I'm going to Wal-Mart or something.'"

The scary thing is, it reminds me of when I got called for jury duty in Georgia, and the notice specifically stated to wear shoes...

Happy New Year Jan. 1st, 2010 @ 05:06 pm

Here's to hoping 2010 doesn't kick us in the metaphorical balls as badly as 2009 did.

Having been born way too late to be around for the whole Beatles "Paul is Dead" thing, I can't decide which pop music conspiracy theory is more awesome: the one where Lady Gaga is an Illuminati puppet, or the one where Andrew WK is a hired actor with an evil Lynchian doppelganger named Steev Mike!

New Year's Eve Update. Dec. 31st, 2009 @ 03:13 pm

Just showered, and that typically affords a moment of inspiration, like a nice cup of coffee. I've been having this intense desire to read lately, whether it's serious academic style books, trashy fiction (I'm so close to downloading the Sookie Stackhouse Diaries onto my e-reader), and a range of in-between. Instead, I've been alternately fretting about various work tasks and watching DVDs with Dezant (the desire to read Sookie Stackhouse novels comes from our voracious marathon watching True Blood Seasons 1 & 2 in about three days). In other pop culture consumption news, I'm downloading new music for the first time in awhile, in large thanks to [info]sarabellum's end-of-year recommendations, available on her facebook profile. But I also downloaded the Sufjan Steven's BQE soundtrack, and an old gem --> Dr. John's first album "Gris Gris" (in keeping with the Louisiana groove inspired by True Blood), which I'm really surprised I never heard of until I heard the "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" track on the Saturday Night Fish Fry compilation.

So within this bi-polar frame of unproductive work stress and zoning out watching DVDs, I haven't gotten much reading done, in spite of a large stack of desirable reading material I have here with me. Well, if I can just finish reviewing this one report about Acehnese fishermen and the "toke bangku" that prevent them from ever improving their economic condition, then maybe I'll allow myself to read a few chapters of something before I address the next work task.

In other news, Gus Dur died yesterday. Indonesia's fourth president, and perhaps the most eccentric and funny. It was wonderful reading the Twitter stream last night, following Indonesian comments about Gus Dur and his contributions to the nation. For a few hours, his death dominating four, sometimes five, of the top ten trending topics. Some incredibly touching comments, most especially from Chinese Indonesians who honored his contributions to make Chinese New Year a national holiday, to permit the public performance of the barong sai dance, and to allow Chinese language publications (in Chinese characters) to be printed again. Other tweets celebrated his off-color humor, his pluralist sensibilities, and his role in improving Indonesian democracy... many tweets achieved this by quoting Gus Dur directly. My favorite: "Tuhan tidak perlu dibela."

I'm not big on holidays, so Dez and I haven't done anything particularly special for XMAS or New Year's. Tonight, Dezant's family will come over to our apartment to watch the fireworks from our balcony. We live on the 28th floor, but we've never observed New Year fireworks from here before, so I'm not sure if we'll get a good view of anything or not. But it's a great excuse to get together, host his family, and saves us from any obligation to do anything else! :)

Going down with the ship... Dec. 29th, 2009 @ 12:56 pm
[info]notodette, posting in [info]journalists
Honest question here, based on a post from my personal journal. How many of you are planning on continuing your journalistic careers, and how many are considering jumping ship and using your talents elsewhere due to the "demise of the industry." If you're no longer in journalism, would you advise continuing on in this field? Why and why not? How long do you think we have?

Writers Support Group Dec. 28th, 2009 @ 01:54 pm
[info]craftacular, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
Why: Creative types need each other, writing is a lonely kinda business.

What: Are you interested in joining a group that supports your work(s) in progress? To talk about the process, frustration and great American novel? No critiquing unless you ask, this is
more of a support group where we start off by writing on a topic and then talking about it. Going around the room exploring topics. Casual, supportive. Must have sense of humor and writing materials.

Where: Location based on how many respond. Crazy Wisdom tea room is an idea.

A Battery of Woes Dec. 27th, 2009 @ 11:14 pm
[info]ramitas_piedras, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
Here's the deal: I need a new battery for my 98 Chevy Lumina... if you have ever had this type of vehicle, you'll know how stupid the engineering is under the hood: the battery is underneath the washer fluid reservoir and a support bar. (The fuse box is under there, too, which is also very helpful.) This makes it near-impossible to jump, nevermind actually replacing the dang thing.

Anyway, I've checked with Murray's, Auto Zone, and Batteries Plus... they all say that they don't do "difficult" installations for batteries.

Anyone else have a car with "difficult" battery locations? Is there anywhere that will not only sell me a battery, but be willing to bust out a socket wrench and actually help me put the thing in?

If you know of an auto store who would help a girl out, or a trustworthy autoshop who won't charge me a ridiculous amount for this, let me know. Luckily I have some leeway with the break...

Thanks, internet friends!

Update:
Thanks for all the tips! After some calling around, the cheapest shop was Conley's in Ypsilanti... they've been trustworthy in the past, and would put in the battery (battery + labor included) for just over $100.

However, as it turned out, minutes before calling the tow truck I got a call from a friend who was able to put the battery in himself... so, the moral of the story is, there are plenty of good shops around but it's nice to have knowledgeable and generous friends around, too. ;)

North Ann Arbor cat vet recommendations? Dec. 26th, 2009 @ 12:16 pm
[info]drumpenguin, posting in [info]ann_arbor_ypsi
I am adopting a lovely stray after searching all known sources for a report of this one being lost. Would like to find a good cat vet close to north Ann Arbor, or at least somewhere in Ann Arbor to get her checked out and use regularly after that. Recommendations and why you like them would be greatly appreciated.

QUE about the healthcare bill Dec. 24th, 2009 @ 03:35 pm

"The bill requires nearly all Americans to buy insurance and forbids insurance companies from denying coverage based on patients' pre-existing conditions."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_health_care_overhaul

What is the insurers charge exorbitant fees to patients with pre-existing conditions? In this case, it seems the bill will not make a difference. Am I missing something?
